Confidence affirmations

How to use them

While there is no right or wrong way to use your self confidence affirmations, here are three ways we’ve found to be most effective:

1. Say your self confidence affirmations out loud

Many affirmationists recommend saying your positive affirmations out loud for at least 3 - 5 minutes in front of a mirror, but here’s the thing—make sure you’re saying them confidently! If you’re self-conscious about someone hearing you and try to keep quiet, your brain clocks that timidness, and your confident statements won’t be as effective.

So when it comes time to say your confidence affirmations, go somewhere where you can be LOUD! In front of a mirror is great, but you can also go to your car, out in the woods, wherever you won’t feel inhibited.

2. Write them down

Another great way to use these daily quotes is to write them down on paper. Again, just like with saying them out loud, aim to write your affirmation for at least 3 - 5 minutes.

Our tip: keep your affirmations to yourself, written in one place. whether it’s a blank notebook or a guided journal like Vertellis Chapters - this way, you can look back after 3, 30, or 300 days and see your progress!

3. Make your affirmation into a meditation mantra

Meditation is such a powerful tool for building confidence and inner strength, and can be made even more powerful by adding self confidence affirmations!

To couple your affirmation quotes with meditation, start by sitting in a comfortable, upright position, close your eyes, and begin to focus on your breath. Then, start to silently repeat your positive statement. If your mind wanders, don’t worry...just keep bringing your attention back to your affirmation. Repeat this cycle as much as you like.

If you can, aim to meditate for at least 5 minutes, but don’t be afraid to go longer (many meditation teachers encourage students to meditate for 20+ minutes).

When to use your daily affirmations for confidence

Now that you’ve figured out how to use your routine confidence declarations, the next question is when do you use them during the day? Again, no right or wrong here, but here are some of our favorite times to utilize these powerful positive thought patterns:

1. In the morning

Mornings are the ideal time to use your positive affirmations for confidence because you set the tone for the day and fill your brain with positive self-talk before negative thoughts get a chance to creep in.

Give yourself a morning pep talk! Say your statements in the mirror after you brush your teeth or meditate with them after you wake up.

2. In the evening

While mornings are a wonderful time to use your self-confidence boosters, utilizing them in the evening is another great option. Saying or writing your affirmations right before bedtime allows your brain to create new neurological connections with these positive statements as you sleep.

Ideally, say or write your affirmations right before drifting off to sleep. When these positive declarations are the last thing you hear or see, it helps reconfigure the subconscious mind and allows you to wake in a state of clarity and increased confidence for the day ahead.

3. Before a big meeting or event

If you’re about to head into a job interview, presentation, audition—anything that may rack up some nerves or bring up limiting beliefs, say your confidence affirmations! Even if you’re not in a place where you can say them out loud, say them to yourself.

To make this even more powerful: before you walk into the room, put one hand on your heart and one hand on your breath belly (the area of your tummy below your belly button). Breathe into your belly and repeat your self-confidence confirmation (either to yourself or out loud) 3 - 5 times.

4. When you catch yourself in a negative thought

When you begin using these positive affirmations for confidence, be aware that negative thoughts and limiting beliefs will still creep in. In fact, in the beginning, they may still come up a lot...and we’re not surprised!

Think about how long you’ve had your limiting beliefs. For many of us, we’re attempting to undo years and years of negative thinking and conditioning. So be gentle with yourself and know that the negative thoughts will come. The great thing is, once you’re aware of your limiting beliefs, you can catch yourself in the act and replace it with a positive thought!

Not sure what your limiting beliefs are? Not to worry! Answer these questions about yourself (in writing, if possible) and read your answers. What negative thoughts or limiting beliefs come up in the process? These are all things that can be worked through with the help of confidence affirmations.

Affirmations for confidence

Do these confidence boosters really work?

It’s hard to believe that something so simple can have such a big impact, but yes, in our experience, self confidence affirmations have the power to create deep inner strength and make compelling changes in your life.

BUT...simply saying these positive statements alone is not enough. When beginning an affirmation practice, keep these five elements in mind to help ensure your success:

Know the ‘why’ behind your affirmations

Self-confidence affirmations only work if you know why you’re doing them (and not just ‘this blog post told me to!’). Are you building confidence to nail a job interview? To get back out there in the dating world? To feel more comfortable communicating your needs in a relationship?

As Simon Sinek says, knowing WHY you’re doing something is the first (and most crucial) step to creating sustainable change. When it comes to your affirmations for confidence—why are you doing them? What will increased confidence and self-esteem do for you?

So step one, find that first ‘why’, and then...go deeper. For instance, why do you want that job? Perhaps it will help you reach a specific financial goal or lessen your commute so you can spend more time with family. Maybe it has flexibility so you can engage in extended travel or will give you financial freedom while you build your own business. Be honest with yourself and remember, there are no right or wrong answers here!

Create a habit out of them

Like any muscle, positive beliefs are a ‘use or lose it’ tool. If you’re not consistently feeding your brain healthy, positive thoughts, of course it’ll go back to the default limiting beliefs. It’s like working out at the gym...if you only go once, or just a few times a month, you can’t expect yourself to walk out looking like The Hulk.

How can you make these self-confidence affirmations into a habit? Here are a few of our favorite ways:

  • Ask a friend to be your accountability partner! Text them a ‘check mark’ emoji after you do your declarations for the day.
  • Put a checkmark on a physical calendar each day after doing them. Seeing your progress will help motivate you to keep going!
  • Create a 30-day confidence affirmation challenge for yourself! Check out our 30-day journaling challenge for inspiration (or to really boost your confidence, you could do the two challenges together).

Couple self-confidence affirmations with action

The ultimate purpose of affirmations for confidence is to change your behavior in a positive way. Consequently, be sure you’re consistently putting yourself in situations that allow your newfound confidence to shine through!

For instance, if your chosen confidence statement is “My body is capable of great things”, you need to give your body a chance to be capable of great things!

Do a challenging workout or anything that feels “hard” or “uncomfortable”. Perhaps something you avoided before because you had fear you wouldn’t be able to do it. Seeing how you face these challenging situations head-on will build your confidence even more. Give yourself plenty of opportunities to prove that your daily affirmations are true.

Self confidence affirmations

Make sure they’re rooted in truth

Speaking of truth, for them to really work, your brain must be able to believe they’re true.

Why is that important? Well, if your affirmations for confidence are not rooted in truth, every time you say them, it’s like little alarm bells go off in your head telling you “That’s a lie! You’re a fraud!” and that sure as heck doesn’t boost your confidence.

So how do you make sure your self confidence affirmations are rooted in truth? It’s all in the wording, which brings us to...

If necessary, re-word your affirmations

Let’s take the positive affirmation “I make good decisions”. First of all, notice that it doesn’t say “I make good decisions all the time” because most likely, that’s not true!

We’re all guilty of making poor decisions (and hopefully learning from them), so it’s not realistic to say “I make good decisions all the time”. But have you made good decisions in the past? If so, then “I make good decisions” is a true statement.

Now, if you have deep-seated limiting beliefs or negative thoughts around making good decisions, perhaps “I make good decisions” is too much of a stretch for your brain—and that’s okay! Try these self confidence affirmations on for size:

“I am capable of making good decisions.”

“I am learning how to make good decisions.”

“I am working to make good decisions each day.”

Do you see the difference? Even if you don’t believe that you make good decisions now, you ARE capable of making good decisions, can be learning how to make good decisions, and can be working towards making good decisions each day.

What if my confidence affirmations aren’t working?

We get it—it can be incredibly frustrating if you’ve made a habit out of your confidence affirmations and aren’t seeing the results you want.

If you’re following the guidelines above in regards to knowing your ‘why’, saying them regularly, taking action on them, and making sure they’re rooted in truth and still aren’t seeing changes in your confidence, check out these tips:

Give it time

We know, we know...these days, we can get so many things with the snap of a finger, but building confidence isn’t the same as ordering something online and having it show up at your door the next day. You’re building a muscle, and building muscle takes time.

How much time? Our advice: try a confidence affirmation for 30 days. If you don’t see or feel a difference in your confidence or self-esteem...try a new one! It could be that the one you’re using isn’t “juicy” enough for you or isn’t tapping into an area you really want to change.

That doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you or that the process isn’t “working.” Sometimes it takes a little trial and error to find a thought that’s a good fit. It’s kinda like dating...sometimes you have to meet a few people who aren’t quite right before you find “the one”. 😉

Track your progress

You know how fitness experts recommend you take measurements and progress pictures to get an accurate view of your results? Well, self-confidence affirmations work the same way.

While you may not be able to track changes in your confidence with a measuring tape, you CAN track it through daily self-reflection. By keeping a journal of your interactions with others, challenges you’re facing in life, and how you’re feeling on a daily basis, you have something to look back on and see how your behavior and confidence change over time.

This can be as simple as reflecting on your day in a blank notebook. But, if starting a journal from scratch seems daunting, try tracking your progress in a guided mindfulness journal like Vertellis Chapters.

Create your own confidence affirmations

Finally, the daily affirmations we’ve included above are a wonderful place to start but don’t hesitate to go off the beaten path and create your own affirmations to cultivate confidence.

Have you thought about an electronic version? When we are caught going to our phones, we could switch over to the app and find questions to ask each other. That way we have no excuse, like this great game I have, but it’s at home.
